The weather so far has been very dramatic. Its either pouring rain or bright and sunny or extremely windy or all of the above. Right now a strong wind is seeping through our windows making a sound that could be coming from Chewbacca or one of his Wookiee relatives.
Today was our first full day in Bath so we decided to take a walking tour. Volunteers who live in Bath put on the tour every morning for two hours and its absolutely free, which happened to be right in our price range! The tour starts out at the Roman Baths. Basically a former public bath house made famous by you guessed it, the Romans. Now doesn't a public bath sound amazing and hygienic. The "baths" are natural hot springs that are famous for their curing powers. Known specifically for healing skin ailments, gout and helping with fertility issues. Our tour guide told us to take that information with a grain of salt as technically there isn't much proof other then that the water is packed full of minerals. If a Royal queen happens to become pregnant while vacationing in Bath then the waters are known to cause pregnancy, or if her skin rash suddenly disappears its because of the water, you get the picture.
From the Baths, we took a tour of the city where our guide pointed out historical tidbits and little hidden secrets about the city we wouldn't have known otherwise. We also may have lagged behind a bit to read some of the pub menus, we will be passing on the black pudding....always. Look it up if you dare.
The next famous Bath spots we saw were the Circus and the Royal Crescent.
The Circus is a circular housing complex, which was built back when Bath aspired to be the Rome of England. Sorry, if you were hoping for elephants and clowns. If you were hoping for clowns, please stop reading now and seek help.
The Royal Crescent, is a long arc of buildings which form a crescent. Its pretty fancy pants, and has been where the well-off of Bath have historically lived. In the current market a townhouse in the Crescent will run around 4.5 million pounds, or 7,650,000 dollars, or a couple paychecks.
Our tour ended back at the Abbey and Roman Baths, both of which we hope to actually go inside of tomorrow.
Some notes so far.
- The food is not as bad as we were expecting.
- 75% of the cars are pretty awesome looking, why can't they make a Jaguar Wagon in the US or a VW Scirocco for that matter?
- Weimaraners have tails, and it seems weird.
- Jane Austen lived in Bath, but hated it. She's a country girl.
- Haven't found any custard tarts, but have been to the candy aisle, twice.
- We didn't pack enough warm clothes.
