British Motoring

For our last full day in the Cotswolds we headed over to the town of Gaydon. Gaydon is home to Aston Martin Headquarters and the Jaguar/Land Rover Research and development facilty. However, we were there for the Heritage Motor Centre. (Aston & Jag/LR were both heavily gated, we drove into both to try and get in, no luck.)

The Heritage Motor Centre holds claim to the world’s largest collection of British Cars. It houses nearly 300 cars in its collection which span the classic, vintage and veteran eras. Even if you're not into cars its a fun place to check out, think of them as movable works of art if it helps.

On our way we also stopped for some last pics of the lovely countryside.

The cool rope rail up to Jen's loft in our cottage.

Miniature camera mode, because we were missing mini things after one day, obviously.

Once we arrived at the HMC we decided to do the Land Rover experience. We we were driven onto an all-terrain off-road testing track which featured rock crawls, steep inclines, descents and surprise water drops in the very latest Land Rover LR4, we tried to get a Defender, but they were obviously pushing the new tech. It was pretty impressive, but even our driver admitted that most owners never end up using the features designed for serious off-roading. At one point we were even led down an 80 degree hill, which was a bit nerve wracking to say the least. All said and done, we were sold on the features of the LR4. So well played Land Rover R&D, well played. Too bad their reliability isn't the best.

Brian and Jen all smiles nearly sideways in the LR4. That is gravel & grass below them.

The DB5 in all its glory. This specific car is from the Bond flick Casino Royale with Daniel Craig.

The very first Land Rover ever made, literally the first production model. It was used as a farm truck its entire life by one owner until it was bought back by Land Rover and restored to its current immaculate condtion. Fun Fact: Our great grampa had one he used as a farm truck on his California ranch. It mainly carried shotguns and hunting dogs.....when it was running.

Since we already referenced Stallone once, why not do it again. This is a Land Rover Cab from the movie Judge Dredd. We saw it once, that one time, it was that memorable.

Seems safe.

Pretty cool initials.

This painting was made using remote control cars, tires is varying sizes and other car related items. No brushes here folks. Really awesome texture, we want to buy a print now.

Seems safe: Part II.

Brian and his childhood dream car, the Jaguar XJ220 Prototype.

Looks like a german snuck in.

Awesome little Morgan.

Her Majesty's Land Rover HMS Albion. It was a deep purple color called Claret with dark navy blue interior. Only had 13,000 miles on it.

There she is taking a ride in it on a trip downunder.

All license plates used to be beveled like this.

The weirdest car ever,

Brian wondering "Why?"

Land Rover Concept.

Leather seats in Land Rover Concept.

The DeLorean from Back to the Future II. Cool, but where is the hover board?

The first Range Rover off the line. Its in Tuscan blue. It was very similar to Laguna Seca Blue with a bit less green in it. Very pretty flat paint color.

The first production Austin Mini. Fun fact: It was first called the "Baby." Luckily that didn't stick.

It was an all day outing at the HMC, definitely worth seeing if you like cars and are in the Cotswolds. We are off to London tomorrow with a stopover on our way to Wimbledon. Stay tuned.
